London Risk Placement Programme
Want to learn and grow alongside experienced risk professionals in the energy industry?
Akhil is a Placement Student in Risk Analysis at RWE in London. In the interview, he shares how he navigates his daily tasks, the challenges of his first weeks, and the support that helped him get started – plus why this role is a great start for his career in energy markets.
What does your usual workday look like?
My usual workday starts with analysing the Profit & Loss and market risks of our trading desks to ensure we stay within risk limits. I then spend time working on risk management tools to improve our processes and reporting. From time to time, I also communicate key risk insights to senior stakeholders.
Why did you join RWE in Risk Analysis?
I joined RWE as a Placement Student in Risk Analysis because of the large exposure to energy markets and the high level of responsibility from day one. The role allows me to work closely with traders, assess market risks, and provide insights that directly impact decision-making. This hands-on experience is a great opportunity to develop my skills and grow in the industry.
How was your experience during the first four weeks at RWE?
My first four weeks were a steep learning curve, with a lot to take in about the business, risk systems, and daily processes. However, the team was incredibly supportive, always willing to answer my questions and help me settle in. Their guidance made it much easier to adjust, and I quickly became more confident in my role.
What does the buddy system look like?
The buddy system pairs you with someone who has been in a similar position before, making it much easier to settle in. My buddy was a great support, answering my questions and giving advice even before I started the job, which helped me feel more prepared. During my first few months, they guided me through the role, shared useful insights, and made sure I had everything I needed.
