Niklas – Graduate Energy Transformation at RWE

What will be my next chapter after graduation?

After successfully completing my studies in electrical engineering (focus: power engineering), I was ready for the next big step - starting my career as an engineer. I came across the graduate programme at RWE Generation & Technology, which not only gave me the opportunity to apply my specialist knowledge, but also offered me a broad insight into an internationally operating energy supply company. Hence, I knew for sure that I would apply for the graduate programme.

From the moment I applied, I went through the application process up to the assessment centre. The assessment centre in particular surprised me in a positive way, as everyone involved was totally open and all the different aspects of the graduate programme were explained to me. A relaxed and inviting atmosphere was created and us candidates had the opportunity to get to know each other. At the end of the day, I was accepted and my time as a graduate could finally begin.

My time at RWE

Right from the start of my time as a graduate, I was involved in my first tasks. Of course, everyone took care to ensure that I wasn't overloaded with tasks and that I got a good insight into the project business. In my first station, I worked in the hydrogen division within the commercial team. I deliberately chose to gain an insight outside of the technical area, as I not only wanted to gain an insight into the various technologies themselves, but also into more overarching areas. Among other things, I am now working with various software to collect geological data in order to organise business cases and analyse locations and potential customers.

The onboarding process for my first station went smoothly and I had close contact with my colleagues right from the start. First of all, I was given an overview of the department and a clear definition of what was expected of the joint cooperation. As a graduate, I was given enough space for further development and I was not just the "new guy" who helped out for a short time, but was able to gain a deeper insight into the hydrogen core business develop my skills in dealing with key economic figures and customers. In the further course of my graduate programme, I would like to look into the project development of battery storage projects within RWE Supply & Trading.

The Graduate Programme

The most exciting thing about the various projects is that you will find yourself in a very dynamic environment and you will have a lot of freedom not only in your work but also in your own development. You can discover the most diverse facets of the entire RWE Group and get to know people with the most varied backgrounds.

My advice to you would be that you should be open to getting an insight into all the different areas of the RWE Group - even if a project station captivates you so much. This way you can gather as many impressions as possible and broaden your own horizon and further your development.
